I thought we could break down the many excuses as to why Diabetics don’t eat healthy and take care of themselves the way that they should.
Excuse Number 1- No one else in my family eats this way so I would be having to make 2 meals and it just isn’t worth my time.
HMMM??? You aren’t worth it? Believe it or not I hear this excuse ALL THE TIME! If you don’t show people that you are worthy they will not treat you as if you are worthy. The bottom line is that as adults we spend most of our time taking care of others and tend to put ourselves last. How can you care for others if you are sick, feeling horrible, no energy or Heaven forbid- DEAD?
Every day in my work I see Diabetics who did not take care of themselves. Do you know what I see? I see people in their 50s on kidney dialysis, amputees, blindness… the list goes on. There are so many horrible side effects of having Diabetes that you owe it to yourself to take care of yourself. You are worth it.
Also, why don’t you think it would be beneficial for the entire family to eat healthy? There is nothing wrong with making sure EVERYONE eats healthy too. You can gradually swing them into it and they won’t even realize it until they are hooked too. If you have Type 2 Diabetes you can easily train your children to eat healthy and perhaps they won’t have it as an adult.
This is a conversation that my 3-year-old grandson had with his daddy last week. His mommy was away from the house for the evening and Stephen had to make dinner. He made hamburgers and fried potatoes.
Stephen: Here is your dinner Caleb.
Caleb: I can’t eat this.
Stephen: Why can’t you eat that?
Caleb: There is nothing green on my plate. Mommy says we have to have something green on our plates.
hahaha Isn’t that awesome? A three-year-old is eating healthy and actually likes it.
Excuse number 1 is debunked. Can you think of other reasons why excuse number 1 doesn’t stand up?
